Places to eat in New York
Many restaurants came and gone during the many years (~14 years) we
lived in New York City. Below is a list of the restaurants that we
felt are worth visiting.
-
Big Wong Restaurant - Chinese
(212) 964-0540
67 Mott Street
Flavorful dishes at dirt-cheap prices. We love the congee, steamed vegetable, and the roast meats which are prefect for take-out if you do not have the time to dine in.
-
Blue Ribbon Sushi - Japanese
(212) 343-0404
119 Sullivan Street
After having the lobster with Miso butter here, Phyllis no longer fancies lobster anywhere else. If you love sushi, get the approx. $100 Chef's Choice platter for 2 and enjoy the best sushi of the day selected by the chef. The place is quite small and does not take reservation, so go early to avoid the long wait.
-
Cafe Lalo
(212) 496-6031
201 West 83rd Street
This is where "You've Got Mail" is filmed. Fabulous desserts! Try
their olive appetizer if you get a chance.
-
Ceci-Cela - Cafe
(212) 274-9179
55 Spring Street
Wonderful desserts and dreamy chocolate truffles!
-
Flor De Mayo - Peruvian Chinese
(212) 787-3388
484 Amsterdam Avenue
Roast chicken with house special fried rice here is the best in town!
-
Golden Unicorn Restaurant - Chinese
(212) 941-0911
18 East Broadway
In the mood for some dim-sum? This is where we go whenever we are.
-
Gotham Bar & Grill - American
(212) 620-4020
12 East 12th Street (between 5th Avenue & University Place)
Cost per person is about $60 (before tax) based on our experience.
It's hard to get seat, so call in for a reservation if you decide to
go. We have been there twice and had enjoyed every dish we
had ordered. The first time we went there, we were very impressed by the
mini dessert they treated us.
- Isola - Italian
(212) 362-7400
485 Columbus Avenue (between 83rd & 84th Street)
Cost per person is about $25 (before tax). It's one of the restaurant
we love to bring friends to because we never get disappointed
at the food.
- Jerry's - American
(212) 966-9464
101 Prince Street
Our favorite brunch place in the village. Don't forget to visit Kate's Paperie across the street after the good eats.
- Joe's Shanghai - Chinese
(212) 233-8888
9 Pell Street
This is the best place to have crab meat soup dumplings even though the other dishes are just OK. Don't bother with its branch store in midtown though - same dish costs way much more at that location.
-
La Caridad - Cuban Chinese
(212) 874-2780
2199 Broadway
Never had Cuban Chinese food before? Try the chuleta (fried pork chop), black beans with yellow rice, egg custard, cafe con leche here and you will be hooked.
-
La Lanterna di Vittorio - Cafe
(212) 529-5945
129 Macdougal Street
This is a café in village and close to NYU. The very perfect place
for couple to have tea/coffee. The dessert is decent, yet the mood is
excellent (especially at night).
-
May Wah Fast Food - Chinese
(212) 925-6428
190 Hester Street
Know why we miss food in Taiwan? Try the pork chop over rice here and you will know why.
-
Menchanko-Tei - Japanese
(212) 247-1585
43-45 West 55th Street
Very good ramen and authentic Japanese home cooking.
-
Olive Tree Café - Middle Eastern
(212) 254-3480
117 Macdougal Street (between West 3rd Avenue & Bleecker Street)
This is where the tables are made of blackboard and silent movies are
played on the wall. Salad, shish-kabob and other grills are excellent, so
are the mixed drinks.
-
Peking Duck House - Chinese
(212) 227-1810
28 Mott Street
The "it" place to have Peking duck in Manhattan. Don't forget to order the duck bone soup!
-
Pongsri Thai - Thai
(212) 582-3392
244 West 48th Street
This family-run restaurant offers excellent Thai cuisines.
-
Popover Café - American
(212) 595-8555
551 Amsterdam Avenue (between 86th & 87th Street)
The brunch is very nice here. Popover is their specialty, so is their
strawberry butter. Just remember they don't take reservation and only
sit you when all parties have arrived.
-
Raymond's Café - American
(212) 929-1778
88 Seventh Avenue (between 15th & 16th Street)
This is one of the best places for brunch. Cost is about $18
(before tax) per person for brunch.
-
Saigon Grill - Vietnamese
(212) 875-9072
620 Amsterdam Ave
Shrimp Sugar Cane, Grilled Pork Chop and the Whole Fish here are part of the reasons why we wish we could still live in the city .
-
Sarabeth's Kitchen - American
(212) 496-6280
423 Amsterdam Avenue
This is one of the best brunch places we know of. Go early else you might have to wait for a long long long time. Try the special sausages as side dish and you will understand why people are willing to wait on the line. However do not go on holiday weekends when we think the regular chef takes his/her break and the food is less tasty than it's usual...
-
Serendipity 3 - Cafe
(212) 838-3531
225 East 60th Street
Never had Frozen Hot Chocolate? Then you don't want to miss this place...
-
T Salon & Emporium - Tea House
(212) 358-0506
11 East 20th Street
A good place to have afternoon tea and chat with your friends.

Very authentic Japanese food. You can try the skewers from the many options they have.
-
Toraya - Japanese Tea House
(212) 861-1700
17 East 71st Street
If you ever want to try wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets), there is no other place you should go other than here in Manhattan. Boxed sweets from here are great gift ideas when visiting your friends.
-
Zabar's - Food & Dining
(212) 787-2000

Best value breakfast and an eye-opening experience
if you want to know how a true New Yorker shop for cooking.
-
East Lake - Chinese
(718) 539-8532
42-33 Main Street, Flushing, New York
Great dim-sum place in Flushing.
